The seed from which Empower4Life has blossomed was planted when our founder, Jennifer Barrett Cox, began volunteering to work with homeless children at the Eastside Family Emergency Shelter in Rosedale, Maryland in 2012. Her time at this transitional shelter opened her eyes to the tremendous disadvantages faced by children coming from turbulent situations.
As a teacher, Jen saw the pitfalls many of these vulnerable children would have to face on the road of life. She knew that their path to education would be particularly hard, as they were bounced from one unstable environment to another without the material resources and, in many cases, the parental support necessary to be successful in school.
Jen saw children with behavioral and emotional problems acting out. She saw children not regularly getting nourishing and healthy foods, who were confined to cramped spaces for long hours. She saw children with hollow, empty eyes, slowly having their spirit crushed by fear and loss of hope. Jen knew that for these kids to have their one true chance at a happy and healthy life, they needed nourishment for body, mind and spirit.
In May of 2015, from this holistic approach, was born Empower4Life.The three pillars of the Empower4Life program are;
Health for Hope
EMPOWER children in shelters to make good choices in life by giving them the tools needed to build and maintain their mental, emotional, social and spiritual health throughout their lives, by offering them access to age appropriate wellness lessons.
Fitness for a Future
EMPOWER children in shelters to learn that physical fitness can be a fun, lifelong habit by offering participation in a variety of games, exercises and movement activities led by fitness professionals.
EMPOWER children in shelters who never have a chance to play recreational sports and games due to financial and transportation constraints to just be kids by providing access to indoor and outdoor play areas.
Resources for Rejuvenation
EMPOWER children in shelters by providing them material resources necessary for life success.
Through YOUR charity and compassion, we are able to collect and distribute food, bedding, clothes, personal care products, school supplies and more to these “at risk” kids.
At Empower4Life, our firm conviction is that a child, when given the proper material resources and knowledge, can gain the PERSONAL POWER to build a self-sufficient future and enjoy a happy and healthy life.
Please join us in our mission to help vulnerable children become happy and healthy members of our communities.
